Back to School Basics

By Mackenzie Eyles

We all know how long holiday brain lasts, but we still are expected to get back into the school routine and start locking in for assessments. But how? How do we get back on track on the first week back?

The first few days after a break can feel like a dream (or even a nightmare). Jumping straight into the busy schedule can be stressful. Instead, ease back into your routine slowly. Spend the first week (and a day) re-adjusting to your school schedule by taking notes, reviewing them and getting back into the routine one step at a time. This helps avoid the overwhelming feeling that can come from doing too much too soon.

The key to regaining focus is setting achievable goals.

Instead of thinking about everything you need to do for the term, break it down into mini tasks. Whether it’s reviewing class notes for 30 minutes or reading one chapter of your English book a day, accomplishing small goals gives you a sense of achievement and motivates you to keep going.

Holidays tend to break study habits so now is a great time to renew your study strategy. Whether you’re a visual learner, auditory learner or prefer interactive techniques, figure out what works best for you and adapt accordingly. You can even try new methods like using flashcards, setting a pomodoro timer or using apps like Quizlet, Blooket, Stile or Knowt.

Also, you have probably heard this from your parents but an organised space means an organised mind. Take some time during the first week back to organise your study area. Clear out old papers, organize your books and create a workspace that inspires you to focus. It can be as simple as rearranging your desk or investing in new stationery. The more organised your space is, the more productive you’ll feel.

And it's okay if that transition doesn't happen overnight. It’s normal to take time adjusting, especially after a break. Be kind to yourself if things don’t fall into place immediately. Give yourself the grace to adapt and find your rhythm at your own pace. It’s all part of getting back on track.

Have an amazing year and just know, you can do this!
