Hatsune Miku: The Face of Digital Idol

By My Nguyen

"Music has the power to unite people from all walks of life, just like Hatsune Miku's concerts."

Hatsune Miku was the first Japanese VOCALOID to be both developed and distributed by Crypton Future Media in 2007, making her the first member of the Character Vocal Series. Using Yamaha’s Vocaloid software, she isn’t just a character, she's a phenomenon that has captivated millions worldwide through her sense of humour, but also her pop and electronic music.

The Development of Hatsune Miku

Hatsune Miku's initial concept was “an android diva in the near-future world where songs are lost.” She was unveiled on August 31, 2007, as part of the VOCALOID2 Character Vocal Series developed by Crypton Future Media.  Her name, "Hatsune" (初音), translates to "first sound," symbolising a new beginning in the vocal synthesis technology. Miku’s distinctive turquoise twin-detailed hairstyle and futuristic attire, designed by manga artist KEI, became an iconic symbol for her brand.

Hatsune Miku is not real. She is not similar to those Virtual Jpop idols or Vtuber as her existence lies in Vocaloid. Vocaloid is a voice synthesizer software that allows users to create songs by typing in lyrics and melodies. Miku’s voice is generated from voice samples of actress Saki Fujita, manipulated through Yamaha's Vocaloid platform. This technology democratises music production, enabling creativity and a computer to compose songs sung by Miku.

Culture: The Marketing of Hatsune Miku

Hatsune Miku was successful in her initial sale, obtaining 3,000 sales within the first week. Her first popular song, “White Letter” by GonGoss (2007), boosted her popularity in the production industry (for Vocaloid). This led to an expansion of marketing possibilities, most of the mass marketing has come after her initial release as a response to the growth of her popularity.

In March 2012, the Nomura Research Institute estimated that the sales of all “Hatsune Miku” brand goods added up to about $ 10 billion (Yen) since her release in 2007. She is also the most collectable figurine with over 1,890 versions.

In 2012, a poll was held for the London Olympic Games 2012, which asked people which singer or group they would like to see at the Olympics. Mikyu reached the No. 1 spot, beating famous singers such as Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. (MORE FREQUENCE RELEASE [with no reupload of her album] 🙂)
