The Greatest Showman (2017)

The Greatest Showman is my all time favourite musical. The cast, the moral behind it and the catchy and heartfelt songs make it the perfect musical to watch for a family movie night or a sleepover with your friends. It is about how P.T Barnum became a famous figure in the circus business, the friendships he makes and the life lessons he learns along the way. The moral story behind the musical teaches us to embrace individuality and accept others and ourselves for who we are. It’s because of this moral story that it is my favourite musical.

In The Heights (2021)

In The Heights is an amazing, must-watch Broadway musical-to-movie adaptation. I admit that, even though I didn't watch the original broadway musical, only watching the movie adaptation, I can still attest to how fantastic this musical is. From the creators of Hamilton, and the director of Crazy Rich Asians, comes the story set in the Dominican-American neighbourhood of Washington Heights, Upper Manhattan, in New York City. The story follows Usnavi, a store owner who longs to return to his parents homeland of the Dominican Republic. It is a romance, as well as a celebration of community, heritage and aspirations. The lessons behind the story, teaches us to celebrate our community and heritage whilst pursuing our goals, making this an amazing musical for everyone.

Descendants (2015)

Descendants is a fantastic disney musical set in the Kingdom Of Auradon, where the son of Belle and the Beast is asked to rule the kingdom. His first proclamation is to let four children of villains from the Isle of the lost, where all the villains are banished to attend Auradon prep. The main moral takeaway that we can learn from this musical is that we are free to make our own choices, and that we are not defined by our parents' legacies, also emphasising the importance of giving everyone a second chance, regardless of their background or perceived “good" or “evil” nature. This is what makes Descendants a magical musical, suitable for everyone.

High School Musical (2006)

I’m sure everyone has heard of this iconic musical before. The characters, songs, and morals make this the perfect musical to watch with your friends. The story is about two high school students: Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens), who challenge the status quo by secretly auditioning for their school’s musical, despite who they once were. Some important life lessons that we can learn from HSM is that it’s okay to try something new even if you're afraid of what your parents or others might think. It is about following your heart, even when it seems impossible. This is why High school Musical will be forever iconic, and why it is one of my favourites.

13: The Musical (2022)

13: The Musical follows the story of 12 year old Evan Goldman, who has to move from New York City to Indiana, navigating his parents divorce, his impending bar mitzvah and his new school’s social circles. The musical explores themes of friendship and staying true to yourself, highlighting how Evan struggles to fit in his new home and how he navigates teen life throughout the film. It is a coming of age story that is a crowd pleaser.
